In this game normal words don't have a single meaning, but can be interpreted however it's necessary to complete the story.

You need to be willing to think outside of the box by giving sentences different interpretations, to find the right loophole to the rules they impose on you.

A seal forbids you to go trough a door? No problem, you can still go trough the DOORWAY! (it's not the "door")

The game was made in 4 days for the GMTK 2025 Game Jam, themed around "Loop".

The "Loop" theme is not very strong in the game, but the entire development was focused on the subject of "Loopholes", so I still feel confident in my entry.

It took me too long to realize what the solution to the final puzzle was.

(+1)

But you still made it. Congrats!

Short, but really fun concept; would love to see this get developed into something bigger. Slightly bummed my original strategy of feeding the king the hamburger and then attacking the hamburger didn't work out - not my fault if anything in between the hamburger and my sword got cut open in the process, right?

Thanks! Could happen in the future, but we can never be sure. C:

Also yeah, attacking the hamburger could be an interpretation that would work. For now though I don't think I'll add new solutions.

(+1)

alternate cut where you kill the evil mage and point out he never asked to have the princess's hand while he was alive

There are many possibilities for extra routes, too many maybe, ahahah. But I think it shouldn't count, since you cannot "have" something while dead, usually.

I got this error after the wizard resurrected the king and Dalion says "Well, sucks to me I guess." When I load my autosave, Dalion says the line and the same error happens again.

Oh. It's probably a bug from attacking the king with an object that's not the sword - since after the cutscene you change map file. I didn't really consider that, thanks for reporting!

wait i just found a BEAUTIFUL loophole, in a minecraft horror mod called "No_Moon.jar" there is an entity called "Nothing Left", you prob already know what i am thinking, but if you can't, i'm going to play No_Moon.jar, wait for Nothing Left to spawn, use some connector to connect my laptop that already has minecraft to my moms laptop (the 1 i'm posting from) to make it so that "there is nothing left" from the inscryption is true (as in there is something called Nothing Left), give Nothing Left the sword, and tell Nothing Left to kill the king, but now, ithink it's time to stop yappin and start cookin, AMBIGUOUS SWORDING WRONG WAAAARP? (the tpot intro starts)

edit: it turns out No_Moon.jar doesn't support my version of minecraft, so can some1 test my theory for me

(-1)

You spoiled the secret ending.

(+1)

Why can't I talk, to recognize evil wizard as a "hero (that) will rise" from the dead? Even if I don't have the power of resurrection, I'd like my character to aknowledge this interpretation.

I suppose game would need to be extensively playtested by multiple different players, to figure out each and every single possible loophole, and what interaction they should cause.

Ohh... yea, I suppose the game should also address interpretations that don't really work but could have a unique interaction... Uh, that sounds pretty cool but at the same time very hard to do. Thanks, I'm getting pretty good feedback! C:

(+1)

Is there a reason why king actively helped you learn to rules lawyer around his own traps before you got the sword?

(1 edit) (+1)

Not many, ahaha. Mainly because he wanted you to wield the sword with some knowledge on how it worked, in order to control the Evil Mage, hoping the binding was enough to protect himself.

I haven't even started playing yet and I already love this game. I was messing around on the title screen and I did "Launch new window" and it opened a new tab in my browser.

(+1)

Ahaha, thanks. The word selector fits so well in the title screen that I had to put it.

(+2)

I'd love to see this concept expanded upon with time to develop more obscure and generally humorous interactions

Also possibly different routes, etc, but other comments already talk about that

(+1)

Yeah, I would love that, but I have too many other games I want to make, so probably in the future. C:

(1 edit) (+2)

great game, unfortunate i could not feed the king to the rat or take the rat with me since my hand didnt want the rat, but otherwise ~10 minutes well spent (like a third of the time was spent in the first room trying to bring the rat with me)

Incredible sentence you got there.

(+1)

funnny

(+2)

> And make no attempt to harm the crown

I'm not trying to harm the crown, nor the king, I'm trying to harm the hamburger... with king.

(+2)

I’m not TRYING to harm the king, I’m just giving the sword to him. Violently.

I’M not harming him, the sword is!

I didn’t TRY to harm the king, his skull just happened to break open when I used him as a weapon to hit this giant stone engraving!

I didn’t harm him, I just gave him a rat that happened to have several diseases!

Etc.

Sadly, there are too many semantics to reasonably account for when making a game like this. :(

(1 edit)

You see, I am not trying to

Harm the king with X

I am trying to
Harm the X with king

Same way you can do at the first puzzle.

Though I guess that won't solve it as, well, we have tried it before, and it didn't work.

well the door puzzle doesn’t have the “don’t attempt to harm the king” curse in play, so I think it’s fine that you can use him as a battering ram. I do wish you could beat the robed man to death with the inscription though. It looks heavy enough to hurt/kill him, and we don’t have a contract forced on us yet, so nothing’s stopping us. I found out you can try with the sword before you officially “take” it, but the curse still denies you from harming the king with it, and then it drops on the ground. You’d think hitting him with the stone tablet would’ve been accounted for, considering the game prevents you from attacking with the sword before you take it, but I guess it just slipped the dev’s mind. The simplest fix would probably just be either make it immovable until you get the sword (like the other weird objects), or to just make Dalion just say “Why?”, because there’s like no reason for him to harm the man at that point.

Yeah, good point. Moving the incription shouldn't be possible without the power of the sword anyways.

(+1)

You can't make any copyright infrangements in the game by associating burgers with kings.

Came here from the recent Icely Puzzles video, good game, amazing concept, could definitely be expanded to a full on game given time (and probably a lot of effort too, making sure all interpretations are accounted for). Having to do some rules lawyering shenanigans is very fun as a gameplay mechanic, especially with the “sets of options” style of choose your own adventure. There was only one case where I was disappointed because I thought up a solution that was unaccounted for, but looking at the comments, there’s definitely a lot more ways you could interpret things. I was upset that the solution in the kitchen didn’t involve what the king said about “You may not leave the castle until another command is given”, combined with attempting to pick him up making him yell “DON’T TOUCH ME!”, which would count as a command and allow you to leave.

(Edit: adding on to this, it doesn’t specify WHO has to give the command. You could theoretically command yourself, or maybe annoy the princess some more for it. That one line is glossed over completely, but there’s definitely some shenanigans to be had.)

(Edit 2: alternatively, just pick up the stone engraving in the tower, and bash the old man in the head before even touching the sword! Problem solved! (Game dev wise, it would probably just be a “Why the hell would I do that?” Moment.)

(1 edit)

Thanks for playing! Yeah, would be cool to add more freedom to interpretation to the player, since for now there's only one solution to every puzzle.

...you know? that gave me an idea. Would be cool to make the game with different story branches/endings based on which loophole you find.

Yeah, I think one of the other posts mentioned giving and taking away the princess from the evil mage so that he could “have her hand”, but not keep it. Could possibly lead to a more peaceful route combined with being able to leave the castle after being given another command, but then you would have to plan for every possible route and variant that the player could make, and it would get messy fast. I feel like multiple solutions leading to the same outcome would be the better approach to avoid the headaches, but I’m not the dev, so I can’t say much. If this is gonna be a full thing, you would already have enough on your plate with attempting to cover every solution and action, and (ironically) making them immune to loopholes. adding more routes would probably only make that worse. Feel free if you’re up to it though, I’m not your boss lol.

(+4)

I really wish this was longer. (And multiple solutions/routes, but I realise that isn't very feasible) Great game :)

(1 edit)

Thanks!
Yeah, it started as a game jam project. I really want to make a longer version in the future, but I aim to finish other projects first C:

(+1)

Just incase you missed some things during the stream there this version of the of the video of the game.

(+1)

Thanks a lot! Don't worry, I made sure to not miss anything! XD

Decided to see if I could clip out of bounds by using quirks of positioning, no, but repeatedly attacking the princess and mage with each other and my hand in the right order gets us all ontop of each other, and I can't do the thing that finishes the puzzle in this position.

And can move the savepoint even if I'm here, far away from it... Not that I can clip out or anything. Pretty solid code!~

(2 edits) (+1)

Wow, I appreciate your testing experiments!

The code is made that it *tries* to move to destination, but executes the action regardless. So even if you get stuck in a corner, you can still attack, talk, or change area.

The only exception in the last version (1.0.4) is entering the tower, where you need to stand in the tile in front of the door, but that creates a bug where you can't enter if you pull the door by one tile. (I'm going to fix it in a possible next - last? - update, it was made to avoid weird interactions if the cloaked man blocked your way)

(+1)

I was just trying to find a way to nudge myself into town, but that seems impossible with the current positioning and items in the first map! Congrats!

Just weirdness where I get "Can't talk to Town" & "Your words were too ambiguous" if I try to well, talk to the Town at the very beginning of the game!

(+1)

Map transitions are only made trough commands, so there is not even the trigger to enter the town, since the player is never able to freely move in the map.

(2 edits) (+1)

love the idea of the game, but I feel like several possible ways to misinterpret don’t work. such as attacking the king without hurting his crown or feeding the burger to the rat the get rid of it. And giving the entire princess but then taking her away. (You will have her hand but not keep it)

(Also if you pull the doorway you can’t go in the tower without leaving to reset the area.)

Also king will order you not to touch him, but you can still move him, and touch his clothing. So just take his crown off.fun game.

Yeah, there would definitely be more interpretations, I really wanted to add more interactions especially for those.
Pulling the doorway is a bug, since it was to avoid entering while the cloaked man was blocking the way.

Thanks for playing! C:

TypeError

can't access property "moveSpeed", $gameMap.event(...) is undefined

wuh oh! Tried to do "give crown to entrance" after the puzzle with the chef hat and got that as it tried to move to the next map?
:) super neat game tho that i definitely plan on coming back to later to finish!

Oh, thanks for reporting!

I was planning a last update for this week, so I'll definitely fix that.

Nice to hear you're enjoying it! C:

(+1)

This was very fun, great job!

Thanks a lot! C:

(+2)

Love it, I can't  wait to play more of this. ;)

ps. instructions unclear I gave to mage the princess's hand and he's still unhappy.

(+1)

I'm stuck on the final showdown. What do I need to do?

Follow the prophecy at the letter, and win when "nothing is left". The other meaning. C:

(1 edit)

Thanks, but I'm still stuck. I don't know how to get rid of everything!

Related suggestion: Can you make it so that coming to the roof (or perhaps the dialogue after the king) prompts you to save your game?

(+1)

Yeah, I'll definitely make the game save.

Also, you got the wrong definition of "left", you don't have to get rid of anything. C:

(+1)

I won! But then this popped up after the credits rolled...

(+1)

Good job!

Yeah, the bug happens if you kill the king with anything but the sword since Dalion tries to put the item down after the credits. I'll definitely fix it after the jam!

(5 edits)

At tower, action "trough" should be "through"

And after the Cloaked Man's reminder about the sign, same typo, and after getting into the tower too.

Mmm. Yep, I thought that was the way through the first order. I wonder if there's a better way. Probably not?

stronges of weapons > strongest of weapons

Tried to Use Rat on King in web version, nope.

(1 edit) (+1)

BUG: Doing "talk to woman" results in Dalion going under the bridge, then this happens:

(1 edit)

Spoilers!

Also, me giving the king a hamburger with a rat in it didn't kill him?

EDIT: Neither does stuffing the king in a hamburger and feeding it to the rat.

(2 edits) (+1)

There's a bug where "Give rat to hamburger" doesn't make the king disgusted, it works with "Move rat in hamburger".

After that, there's some extra steps, since by contract you can't harm the crown in any way.

You get a small hint by trying to attack him.

Welp, I recently tried stuffing the king into the hamburger and feeding him to the rat, and that didn't kill him, either.

(1 edit)

Ahahaha! I suppose the rat has a slow digestive system. XD

Yeah, doesn't work because I didn't handle all situations. I have a fix ready where you cannot "handle" the king, he just orders you to not touch him.

(+1)

Thanks for reporting. It's due to the target of "Woman" being on the map change instead of the woman in question. I fixed it but had to revert to the previous version for the jam. After the voting period it will be fixed, thanks! C:
