"I SAID: this is not a dream. You actually DIED. And in a pitiful way, if I may add"

The game over screen has always been a mystery: what hides behind it?

It might surprise you that behind it lies the goddess of life, who, by making just an exception, brings the hero back to life to enable him to resume his arduous path to victory.

But- what if the hero of the story and the goddess of life don't get along well?

The Respawn Banter is a unique adventure and visual novel hybrid where you are bound to die during your exploration. In the afterlife, the goddess of life’s role extends beyond mere revival: she seizes every opportunity to humor the hero’s demise, making each encounter a one-of-a-kind witty exchange.

Game features:

  • Dying is never the punchline: it’s the start of the joke! Experience countless dynamic discussions based on how you reach a game over! "Am I dreaming?" "Was the prophet a fraud?" "Can slimes really get drunk?": with all the heated discussions that will ensue, you'll forget that you’re actually dead!
  • Lots of carefully crafted dialogues!
  • Play as the hero of the prophecy, or at least, fail to identify with him since he’s not the classic silent protagonist. Actually, he's a dummy who never shuts up when he should and quite frankly sucks at not dying.
  • Explore and avoid unfairly funny traps[/b]. Be ready to die, but always with a smile on your face!
  • Get to know the cast of characters you will meet over the course of your multiple lives!
  • Multiple secondary endings, depending on which areas you want the poor hero to meet his demise.

Played the demo.

This game is cringe, with bad jokes, awkward writing, terrible meta humor and characters have this strange an uncanny death stare...
...
...

I wishlisted it on Steam and can't wait to buy it. 5 stars.

edit: fix a grammar mistake in the first paragraph.

Thanks for playing it!

But yeah, the game is usually a hit-or-miss for players, so your comment got me in the first half, not gonna lie.

It is genuinely funny even when its cringe (or is it because of it?).

Its hard to explain, like I was laughing aloud at the stupid slime signpost gag. Its like when a friend tells the same terrible awful joke but you can't help but laugh affectionately.

BUG: Spammed Slash on Entering the Castle. Can't move now. Or is invisible. Seems to be invisible.

----

Do you know how to make the game so it doesn't overlap with other NXJS games / so I can play multiple MZ games at the same time / store them in the Windows 10 Task Bar?

----
Went back into the game, just to check everything... Reloaded my latest save...

Not sure if Activating the Hole should send the hero into it... I was hoping he'd just comment on it.

Tried to finish talking to the slime, approached it from the right, and when I got eaten, the expanding slime was up and to the left of the Hero.

Mashed from the left, and somehow got eaten / died even though no slime expanded. And trying from the bottom leads to best results / survival. But the Yellow Slime Fleeing actually becomes blue when it flees? I can't tell. It happens so fast...

Lol, "Can You Please Die Less!"

The attack animation is programmed in a weird way, I'll have to rework how it works on the complete game, thanks for the report. I'll also look for the slime bugs, since that part is more complex that it seems.

RPG Maker MZ behaves in a weird way, so I unfortunately I don't know how to make it overlap with other games.

Interacting with the hole makes you fall to avoid just checking and avoid the hole banter, but I might add a dialogue and a stupid excuse to make him fall anyways.

...and slimes won't let you read indeed! I tried twice immediately! That's an amazingly dense sign! heh!

Then I tried the sword! I wonder what happens if I reverse that order...

And referencing your other games! Cool! Overlay!
...
Darn, I went left again, looking for the remains of my first defeated "foe"!
....
And done! Took me about 35 minutes and 17 deaths, ~4 to the Orbs, to hit the Title Drop! Aww!

Then I reloaded
....

After biting hand:

I not sure > I'm not sure
...
pinapple in mana potions > pineapple in mana potions x2
...
Hole:
innocent pleads > innocent pleas
...
soar the skyes [Not "skies"? Intentional?]

Thanks for playing the game! And also thanks for the grammar/typos report, I fixed it! ^_^

Some banters are split in two parts, so if you die in a different order, you'll see the same dialogues but in a different combination. As for the sword, you can't die to it later so if you die there first you miss the dialogue.

Hello,

Last night I streamed your game. Overall, I thought the tile art were very nice, and the levels looked very well constructed and thoughtfully built. However, the humor really, really did not work, making the experience very painful to have to sit through.

You can watch my full experience with your game below. Use the time stamps to skip to when I start playing your game.

First of all, thanks a lot for trying my game!

I'm sorry you didn't like the humor, but I understand it's not for everybody.
I also know not everyone likes 4th wall breaks because they remove immersion to the game; I think I'll use them more carefully, but not completely remove them: I think they could still be funny if used well.

Your gameplay helped me understand some extra dialogue not necessary who needs a little cut. So thanks again.

PS: You really shouldn't treat other's humor as objectively wrong. Other users told me it's not their kind of game and humor, and I respect that. I know you said you was criticizing the game and not the author, but the humor is mine, after all. XD

Streamed this yesterday with the dev present, but leaving this here for posterity:

  • +The game banks on humor, and while humor is subjective, it worked really well for me and I enjoyed all of it.
  • +The timing on the deaths was amazing and event choreography was great.
  • +The animation, limited as it seemed, was great, especially when the goddess abuses the hero.
  • +The art is cute and simple, and works well for the game. A slight exception would be that the mapping is deceptivel messy, almost suggesting you can do stuff in areas that are basically just blocked off.
  • -My one complaint maybe would be the sudden ending out of nowhere. Also for the spike traps, aside form bashing into them multiple times I did not have a good grasp on how to get past them, and it seems like they just stopped activating when the joke was done (fair enough).

I really enjoyed this entry, with the cave-at that as humor is so subjective, this might not be for everyone. But it sure as hell was great for me.
